The Argentine midfielder moved to the Hammers from Al Jazira of the United Arab Emirates in the summer of 2015, originally on loan. The following year, the deal became permanent. Lanzini played in 226 games for Claret and Blue over the course of eight seasons, appearing in all competitions and scoring 32 goals.
He also won the Club’s Goal of the Season award twice, first for his memorable last-second goal against Tottenham Hotspur in 2020/21 and then the following year for a spectacular volleyed finish against Crystal Palace. Lanzini twice received the club’s Goal of the Season award during his tenure there, and he finished second in the 2016–17 Hammer of the Year competition.
He scored twice during West Ham’s recent Europa Conference League winning run while making eleven appearances. After undergoing extensive knee surgery, Angelo Ogbonna has been given the opportunity to sign a new deal with the team. With a goal to cap off a 3-1 victory over Leeds United at London Stadium in his farewell home game for the club last month, Lanzini, a fan favorite as well as a teammate, cemented his spot among West Ham United’s top 70 all-time appearance makers.
West Ham Announced New Jersey Numbers After Squad Alteration
As a result of Gianluca Scamacca, Alphonse Areola, Maxwel Cornet, and Lucas Paqueta choosing new jersey numbers, West Ham has announced four alterations to its roster. After Manuel Lanzini vacated the position in the summer, Lucas Paqueta will don the number ten for West Ham this year.
The Brazilian playmaker, who made 41 appearances for the Hammers during his debut season in England and helped Jarrod Bowen score the game-winning goal against Fiorentina in Prague’s Europa Conference League final, has moved from wearing the number 11. Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca, who was previously sporting the number seven, will wear that shirt in its place.
The number seven, which is currently a free squad number, was worn by the 24-year-old when he scored eight goals in 27 games for West Ham. Before Paqueta, the number 11 was worn by Paul Ince, Stewart Downing, Jesse Lingard, Robert Snodgrass, and Nikola Vlasic. Maxwel Cornet, a dynamic winger who was also a recent arrival, has also made the decision to change his shirt number for the 2023–24 season.
He will now wear the number 17, instead of the 14 he wore in his first season in east London. Bowen (before switching to 20) and Javier Hernandez both wore the number in the past. Between 2017 and 2020, Hernandez scored 17 goals in 63 outings for the Hammers. Alphonse Areola, the goalie, will switch from number 13 to number 23 for the 2023–2024 season. It has previously been worn by Jose Fonte and Issa Diop.
