Angelo Ogbonna accuses West Ham United of being ‘toxic’ as their terrible Premier League season continues.
West Ham is currently in grave danger as they are just three points above the relegation zone. When the Hammers were last in this predicament in the 2019–20 season. Angelo Ogbonna was there at the London Stadium. And he is aware of how unpleasant things can become there.
In his eight years with the team, he has made 226 appearances, progressed through the ranks to become vice captain, avoided being relegated in the 2019–20 season. Recovered from a nine-month cruciate ligament injury, and is currently competing for a European title. Ogbonna compares West Ham’s current struggles to Jurgen Klopp’s early years as manager of Liverpool and believes that the club is going through a “transition” period.
Since there isn’t the new management bounce we saw at the end of 2019, it might be argued that things are worse now. Since his comeback, or at least for a few years. David Moyes has worked wonders for the Hammers. In recent months, the situation has become worse. And among the squad and its followers, animosity has been spreading like wildfire.
Angelo Ogbonna Vows West Ham
The Italian spoke to the Daily Mail on the Hammers’ poor start to the season. He stated “I remember three years ago at this moment, the atmosphere was even more toxic. But even though we are in kind of the same situation, the atmosphere is more positive than it was.”
The fact that the 34-year-old said it was “even more toxic” shows that the London Stadium has a hazardous environment right now. To be quite honest, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realise that West Ham currently has significant problems both on and off the pitch.
West Ham’s players don’t seem to have the commitment and zeal necessary for a relegation fight. And the team has no identity or style of play. But Angelo Ogbonna isn’t one of them. And we’re hopeful that between now and the end of the season, his knowledge and leadership will be a huge help to us.
It is clear that Moyes is no longer the best person to guide the Hammers forward. Regardless of what occurs over the next four to five weeks. West Ham invested more than £165 million on new players over the summer. Ogbonna said, “These days, the market lies occasionally.
The cost on the market is really expensive. They say, “Oh, we spent £200 million, they ought to do something significant.” The value of the player is entirely different, but the market is the market.
Ogbonna has had a challenging season after missing the final six months of the previous one owing to a knee injury. But he is back in the saddle and was praised for his performance in the 1-0 victory against Fulham last Saturday by manager David Moyes and Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer.
